Author and Journalist Dia Wall’s Best Advice for Keeping the Important Things in Perspective

Image
As an award-winning journalist, wife, and mother of two, Dia Wall knows a thing or two about achieving goals—both personal and professional. It’s a thing the evening anchor and newsroom leader of the KSHB41 NBC affiliate in Kansas City prides herself on.  Now, with the publication of her book, The Unhappiest One: Finding Joy in My Journey to Purpose , in September, Wall has achieved something else: sharing some of her hard-earned wisdom with others. “Success is great; we all want that,” she says. “I’ve wanted nothing more than to get to the point professionally where I’m at right now. But I think, for me, the reason why I felt it was time to write what I call a ‘sort-of memoir’… is that I have to keep things in proper perspective. That’s the biggest thing I’ve learned.” But as Wall explains in her Achiever’s Exclusive interview with Josh Ellis, her current perspective on happiness and purpose was something that didn’t come naturally. Her book is about trying to reconcile the feel

The Unifying Power of a Family Mission Statement

The chaotic, hectic pace of a home-based business underscores and even heightens the need for each family member to feel anchored and unified in what the family is all about. Without such anchoring, everyone goes their own way and the family ceases to be the vital source of nurturing support and enabling power that it can and should be. Creating a family mission statement can be a transformational event. Most people’s first mission statement happens during wedding vows. The second happens in stages—often without realizing it—when large life decisions are made. Through the years, your mission statements will change as your family changes, but it gives a common sense of destination and manner of travel that represents the social will and culture of your family. Directly or indirectly, consciously or subconsciously, it guides your family. The First Family Mission Statement If you plan to marry or be in a long-term relationship, take the time to talk about what that looks like to you.

Why Supporting Small Businesses This Holiday Season Is More Urgent Than Ever

Image
Last year we watched small businesses feed the needy, host socially distant dance parties and power-wash playgrounds , all while their doors were closed. And although for some 2021 may finally feel like business as usual, the truth is many (if not most) small businesses still need our help.  According to a September 2021 Small Business Pulse Survey (SBPS) by the U.S. Census, 67.5% of small businesses surveyed reported the pandemic had a large or moderately negative effect on their business. The current report is part of a series of surveys designed to measure how the pandemic is affecting the nation’s small businesses, and the results are sobering. Nearly 40% of small businesses believe it will be more than six months before their business will return to its normal level of operations; however, 10% said they do not believe their business will ever return to what it once was.  Although some of these businesses may be small or unfamiliar, it doesn’t negate their importance in our soci

Using Your Enneagram Type to Embrace Your Strengths and Understand Your Struggles

When you’re trying to untangle the complicated mystery of your own personality, it helps to have a guide. Sarajane Case has always been fascinated by why people behave the way that we do, and how we can make better choices. When she discovered the Enneagram, it felt like the key to getting as close to those answers as possible. “We’ve boiled it down into the essence of why people do the things they do,” she says of the test. Sarajane is bringing that key to everyone else, through her book The Honest Enneagram: Know Your Type, Own Your Challenges, Embrace Your Growth , and her podcast Enneagram & Coffee . In this episode of SUCCESS Stories , Sarajane talks to SUCCESS’s Madison Pieper about how to find your Enneagram type, why it’s more than just a number, and how it can help you better understand the forces and experiences that drive you. Avoiding the Price Trap: 3 Tips to Succeed as a Mission-Based Business

On this week’s episode of SUCCESS Line , I talk to Maria. Maria quit her job as a project manager two years ago to follow her dreams of starting her own business, a decision she actually made after picking up a copy of SUCCESS magazine.  Maria came on the show with two questions that I’m guessing most entrepreneurs reading this have experienced: How can I attract more customers to my business when there are so many cheaper options?  What should be my strategy for increasing my sales when my competition has much more capital to invest? These questions are such common ones for smaller businesses competing with big supply chain players. However, they focus on the wrong thing: cost. If you want to free yourself from the competition on price trap, read on for my top three tips to succeed as a mission-based business. I promise, once you decide that you are no longer willing to compete on price alone, your world (and your business) will open up. 1. Get clear on your mission.  Compet

Should I Pay Off My Student Loans Or Invest? Here’s How To Decide

Image
Student loans in America average near the $40,000 mark, and it makes it difficult to decide whether to invest or pay off student loans. Because, let’s face it, getting out of debt and saving for retirement is equally as important.  Pay down debt or invest? Factors to consider  There are three elements that determine which route will suit your needs best. These are:  The mathematical approach:  Using math, you can figure out what will be more beneficial – paying down debt or using extra cash to invest. For example, if you have a higher interest rate than what you’re earning on your investment, you might opt to pay off the debt first.  But math isn’t the only important factor at play. The emotional approach:  Having student loans looming over your head sucks, and it’s only natural to want to get rid of it. The emotional decision might lead you to a decision that makes you feel better, even if it doesn’t make as much sense financially.  A hybrid approach:  With the hybrid approach,

Ask the Coach: I Don’t Have the Mental Bandwidth to Tackle Growth in Every Area—What Do I Do?

I can’t seem to find the mental bandwidth to improve in all the areas of life that I want to improve. When I lean into my business, my health becomes neglected. When I focus more time on exercising, I feel I’m not present enough for my kids. I’m losing hope that I can ever fully reach my potential. What can I do? There are two issues to unpack here. First, the idea that balance will be the stabilizer for you, and second, the immeasurable amount of effort we pour into seeking that balanced life . Everyone searches for it, but few if any ever find it. Your use of the term bandwidth is interesting—and telling. Think about the bandwidth of the internet in your home. It’s finite. When that bandwidth maxes out, what happens? Your streaming slows, the entire picture is no longer visible, and you shut it down. There is no more bandwidth to use. We are all aware of and accept the battle between our internet’s bandwidth and our Netflix account, but we don’t correlate that to the use of ban
