The Rise Of Ghost Jobs

Image
Finding a job has become increasingly difficult. Unemployment rates rose to 4.1% in June , and Americans are staying unemployed for longer. With all the factors involved, job hunting can often feel like a full-time job in itself. But one look at all the job openings on recruiting platforms and LinkedIn suggests a different story. Why? Ghost jobs. “Ghost jobs, which are open positions that companies list but have no intention of filling, create a false sense of opportunity,” says Stephanie Alston, CEO and founder of BGG Enterprises. BGG Enterprises is a diversity recruitment agency. “This can be frustrating for candidates who spend time and energy applying, only to receive no response or discover the position was never intended to be filled.” According to Resume Builder, ghost jobs are on the rise. In a survey they published in May , 39% of hiring managers said their company posted a fake job in the past year. The Reason For Ghost Jobs There are a few reasons that ghost jobs exis...

5 Ways to Show Your Value at Work

After two years of scrambling to attract talent, companies are suddenly focused on cutting staff. More than half of U.S. business leaders (60%) said their company is likely to have layoffs in the second half of this year, according to a survey from ResumeTemplates.com. Several companies , including Cisco, Intel, IBM and Goldman Sachs , have announced plans to cut staff.  Meanwhile, a recent survey shows that 7 in 10 workers are worried about being laid off. “Right now, our careers are existing in a context that is very pro-employer, and a few years ago, during the Great Resignation , it was very pro-employee,” says leadership and career coach Phoebe Gavin . So far this year, the industries with the greatest number of layoffs have been media, technology and entertainment, she says. Layoffs happen when companies either need to rebalance their finances or when they decide certain tasks are no longer essential to the core business, Gavin says. Once companies decide to make these c...

Apple’s Customer Loyalty Continues to Thrive Despite Sluggish Demand for iPhone 16

Image
Expectations were high before Apple unveiled the latest iterations of its smartphone lineup. But now that the iPhone 16 series is finally here, preorders got off to a rather slow start, sparking discussions on what could have gone wrong for the Cupertino giant’s premium devices. On Sept. 9, Apple formally introduced a slew of new devices or, technically speaking, yearly updates to its existing products. To much fanfare, the tech company announced the Apple Watch Series 10, new AirPods and the iPhone 16 series—comprising four models: the standard iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and the flagship model, the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Compared to last year’s iPhones, the iPhone 16 lineup seems unchanged save for the new Camera Control button, upgraded camera performance, bigger screens on the Pro variants and better battery life overall. On top of this, Apple promised the innovative incorporation of artificial intelligence features into its latest smartphones, among other software enha...

Outsmarting a Narcissist at the Office

Image
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and entitlement, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others, according to Mayo Clinic . Narcissists seek attention and feel superior, and they often have fantasies of power, beauty or success. They take advantage of others; they feel they deserve special treatment.  And as you can imagine, that makes a narcissist a real nightmare in the workplace.  The good news, says Erin Leonard, Ph.D., a psychotherapist and the author of the book How to Outsmart a Narcissist: Use Emotional Intelligence to Regain Control at Home, at Work, and in Life , is that there are ways to identify and work with (and maybe even outsmart) a workplace narcissist. The bad news is that it might not be easy. In her book, she writes that the workplace can be one of the trickiest places in which you might have to interact with a narcissist. But with specific strategies and emotion...

How ‘47 President Dominic Farrell Reinvented The Long-Time Sports Brand

When Boston native Dominic Farrell was approached to take a leadership role at ‘47 in September 2020, the sports lifestyle brand was navigating a turbulent period. COVID-19 had swept the sportswear business into rocky waters, casting doubt on the company’s future. Many employees had been furloughed, and with the looming threat of going out of business, Farrell stepped in with a clear mandate to rebuild without limitations.  “There [were] no preconceived notions at that point,” he says. “It was the 75-year-old, or nearing 75-year-old company that … could be rebuilt in a completely different look, feel and culture than it would have ever existed before.” Farrell has always been a sports fanatic. As a kid, he was decked out in sports jerseys and collected trading cards. It wasn’t long before he knew he had to be in the business, too.  His early roots in the sportswear industry began over a decade ago when he started out as a sourcing specialist for Adidas. His expertise in bus...

New Research Says Internet-Fueled FOMO At Work May Harm Mental Health

Image
Beneath its trendy “FOMO” acronym, “Fear Of Missing Out” might mask destructive beliefs that ripple over to your emotional wellbeing. New research from the University of Nottingham discovered FOMO in the digital workspace can increase anxiety and stress, posing a risk to mental health. The revealing study found employees afraid of missing crucial information—who were simultaneously bombarded with it from digital sources—were more susceptible to overwhelm and burnout. “FOMO has both unconscious and subconscious features,” says Clarissa Silva, behavioral scientist and founder of C Silva Solutions, LLC . And what triggers FOMO is unique for each of us. Unlike when you scroll social media in your free time, potentially experiencing pangs of missing out, FOMO might manifest as missed opportunities for career advancement, networking and more. According to the study, the constant flow of news, messages, meetings and emails only magnifies the pressure. The upside is those who practiced mind...
