Niké Ojekunle Got Scammed. Now She’s Helping Others Avoid the Same Fate By Advocating for Financial Literacy

Image
Niké Ojekunle calls herself one of the “OG influencers,” and since joining TikTok, the Nigeria-born, Los Angeles-based blogger’s “get ready with me” videos and skincare recommendations have helped her amass over half a million followers . As her follower count grew, she also negotiated more and more sponsorship deals for herself, using her business savvy and entrepreneurial mindset to ink deals with fashion and beauty brands.  “I’ve always been self-managed,” Ojekunle says. “I’m good at it myself. It just doesn’t make sense for me to have a manager.” But when a group called the Carter Agency reached out, the offer was a good one. They understood that Ojekunle preferred to work alone, and they were fine with that. Instead, they wanted to help her land occasional one-off campaigns with big-name clients. Ojekunle’s mom had just been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, and Ojekunle was flying back and forth from Tampa to Los Angeles to be with her parents. She wanted someone else t...

Jodyann Morgan loved her job as a security guard for sports and entertainment brands. “I was able to see all of my favorite artists perform while making money,” she says. One of her job highlights was when she worked as a security guard at a Rihanna concert. “Seeing her up close was amazing,” Morgan recalls. Since she loved her job, Morgan didn’t anticipate having a second career. But now she’s the founder and owner of a candle and planter company called CTOAN Co . The acronym stands for “Can’t Think of a Name.” So, how does someone go from maintaining safety at events to crafting planters and candles? It all started with seeking a stress-reducing hobby  Morgan’s career transition began in 2020, as she struggled to cope with the violence related to the protests during that time. “The world was just chaotic at that time, and I needed a hobby that I was able to do, from the comfort of my home,” she says. After discussing different types of anxiety-relieving hobbies with her thera...

Jen Mahone-Rightler Helps Businesses Embrace DEI Initiatives

The first thing I ask when I sit down with Jen Mahone-Rightler, founder of the diversity and inclusion firm Elements2Inclusion, is about her climb up the corporate ladder as a Black woman—and how her work took her from Kenosha, Wisconsin, to senior roles in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI leadership) at companies like Epsilon and Boeing. The first thing Mahone-Rightler tells me? “I didn’t have a traditional ‘climb,’ that’s for sure,” she laughs.  Raised by her grandparents, the youngest in a family of nine kids, Mahone-Rightler grew up with dreams of being an architect. When she stared at the wood paneling that lined the rooms of their home, she saw buildings—whole cities—materializing before her eyes in the patterns of the grain. She studied architectural engineering at Prairie View A&M University and, with the help of her father, got a job at a firm. From there, wide-eyed and ready with her portfolio in hand, she spent a long time making coffee for the architects....
