Family Traditions: Why They’re the Glue of Great Families

Everyone, particularly children, needs an identity larger than themselves—something they belong to, feel a part of, and gain security and protection from. It is kids who do not get this identity from their families who are drawn to the rituals, “colors,” and traditions of gangs or other identity substitutes for families. Strong traditions exist in every lasting institution—in schools, in fraternities and certainly in families. Traditions are the glue that holds families together. Kids love and cling to family traditions not just because they are enjoyable, because they are predictable and stable in an unpredictable world . Almost all families have traditions, at least subconscious ones, often centering on holidays or special occasions. But some parents come to realize the importance of traditions, and the ability of good traditions to teach values to improve communication, to give security to kids and to hold families together. Such parents can redefine and refine their family tradit...

What I Learned from Keeping a Gratitude Journal

Confession: Before this assignment, I’d never even considered keeping a gratitude journal. I imagined parchment, elf-crystals, perfumed writing chambers where the air is 75% mulberry incense and purple-haired millennials talking an awful lot about chakras. Gratitude is also an example of what humans call feelings, and I have spent an awful lot of energy trying to avoid those. But as it happens, what makes me a lousy human also leaves me pretty well-qualified to gauge the effects of a gratitude journal —a tally of thanks I kept throughout December to see whether the gurus and positive psychologists are right about its uplifting power. Science has fallen over itself proving how gratitude makes you not only a warmer person, but also a healthier one. Research has shown a link between gratitude and emotional well-being , as well as a potential correlation between gratitude and improved sleep quality . The idea of the gratitude journal, as with most leading forms of mindful personal devel...

How to Forgive

Image
Your parents told you to forgive, and most religions encourage forgiveness. Plus, it’s just a nice thing to do, right? People who genuinely forgive tend to be happier and potentially even healthier, science suggests. For example, a 2019 study published in Psychology & Health found that forgiving others aided in achieving better sleep, which, in turn, has the potential to improve health .  So, how do you go about forgiving —especially if you have tried, but still dwell on past hurts? Robert Enright, professor of educational psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a leader in forgiveness research, and is co-founder of the International Forgiveness Institute. In one of his books on the subject, Forgiveness is a Choice , Enright breaks down forgiveness into five steps: Admit you’ve been treated unfairly. Express your anger. Recognize the wrongdoer is a person who is more than the offense at hand. Accept that your pain may never go away completely. F...

That’s the world Ricky Mendez wants to live in. As a self-proclaimed “gratitude enthusiast” and implementational speaker, Mendez’s work in mindset and prosperity planning includes a focus on gratitude. He’s even working on a children’s book about the subject. “If you want to make change, I don’t think there’s any better way to start than with young kids,” he says. “Because they’re like the eternal optimists . They haven’t been guarded with a ton of negativity and pessimism.”  We sat down with Mendez to talk about gratitude, specifically as it relates to the little ones in our lives, and to find out some simple steps you can take to get kids thinking gratefully from a young age—skills that can also apply at any ...
